Linda Yaccarino has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, bringing her two-year stint to a close. Her departure marks another significant shift in Elon Musk’s tech empire, which has recently faced turbulent times.
In a statement posted on X, Yaccarino said, “After two incredible years, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of 𝕏.” Reflecting on her journey, she added, “When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company.”
She expressed gratitude towards Musk for assigning her the responsibility of safeguarding free speech, spearheading a turnaround, and overseeing the transformation of X into what she described as the “Everything App.”

During her leadership, Yaccarino led a strategic effort to rebuild advertiser trust while pushing forward with new product innovations. She highlighted that the team focused first on user safety—particularly child safety—and then on restoring confidence among advertisers.
“This team has worked relentlessly from groundbreaking innovations like Community Notes, and, soon, X Money to bringing the most iconic voices and content to the platform,” she stated. Community Notes, a user-powered fact-checking initiative, was one of the flagship features introduced under her watch. X Money, a financial services product, is also expected to launch soon.
Acknowledging the collective achievements of the platform, Yaccarino said, “I’m incredibly proud of the X team – the historic business turnaround we have accomplished together has been nothing short of remarkable.”
She described X as a platform that had evolved into a “digital town square for all voices” and the “world’s most powerful culture signal.”
“We couldn’t have achieved that without the support of our users, business partners, and the most innovative team in the world,” she added.
While Yaccarino has not revealed her future plans, she assured users that she remains part of the X ecosystem. “I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world,” she wrote. “As always, I’ll see you on 𝕏.”
According to news agency Reuters, Yaccarino’s resignation adds to the series of upheavals affecting Musk’s broader ventures — from declining sales at electric carmaker Tesla to controversies surrounding his artificial intelligence pursuits. Musk has also recently engaged in a public spat with former US President Donald Trump.
Advertising Woes, Legal Battles Marked Yaccarino’s Tenure As X CEO
Yaccarino, a seasoned professional from the advertising industry, was brought in to restore advertiser trust amid growing concerns over the rise of toxic and hateful content on the platform. During her time at X, she also took legal action against certain advertisers and the World Federation of Advertisers, accusing them of colluding to deprive the platform of advertising revenue, including through an organised boycott.
Her resignation comes in the wake of a fresh controversy involving Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Musk’s AI company xAI. The chatbot recently posted content featuring antisemitic tropes and glorifying Adolf Hitler. The posts were removed after a wave of backlash. In response, Yaccarino stated she was working to regain advertiser trust and reaffirm the platform’s commitment to user safety.
