Skin Cancer does not just affect the skin, it can also develop around the eyes, particularly on the eyelids, often going unnoticed until it causes serious damage. Here are some key facts everyone should know about how skin cancer impacts eye health, including early warning signs and high-risk groups.
Impact Of Skin Cancer On Human Eyes:
- Skin Cancer Can Affect The Eyelids And Surrounding Area: Skin cancer can develop on the eyelids and nearby areas, often mimicking harmless lumps like styes or cysts. If left untreated, it may invade nearby tissues or, in late stages, spread to distant organs. Early detection is crucial, regular self-checks and awareness help avoid delayed diagnosis.
- Types Of Skin Cancer Affecting Eyelid: The prevalence of eyelid cancer in the Indian population differs greatly from that in the Western population. Sebaceous Gland Carcinoma (SCG) is the most frequent eyelid cancer in India, while the rest of the world show Basal Cell Cancer (BCC) being the most common cancer of the eyelid. Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma are other less common cancer affecting eyelid.
- Sebaceous Gland Carcinoma (SGC): SGC originates from the oil-producing glands of the eyelids and is often mistaken for benign conditions like a chalazion or chronic blepharitis, leading to delayed diagnosis. Key warning signs include persistent eyelid swelling, eyelash loss, or yellowish nodules that do not resolve with empirical treatment. This aggressive malignancy has the potential to spread (metastasize) if left unchecked. Early biopsy is crucial for any persistent or atypical eyelid lesion to ensure timely detection and treatment.
- High Risk Due To Sun Exposure In Indian Climate: The Indian tropical climate provides year-round sunlight, thus outdoor workers such as farmers, construction workers, traffic cops and others are exposed to UV on a daily basis, increasing the risk of cancer. Less use of sun protection with sunscreen and eyewear exacerbates the problem.
- Warning Signs Not To Ignore: Watch for non-healing lumps, eyelash loss, crusting or ulceration, persistent redness, or pigmented/irregular lesions. Seek medical attention promptly
- How Skin Cancer Affects Vision And Eye Function: Untreated eyelid cancers may invade the orbit and surrounding tissues, causing vision problems or requiring removal of the eye.
