Vat Savitri Vrat 2025 — Know The Significance And Religious Importance of Bamboo Fans

Vat Savitri Vrat 2025: The Vat Savitri festival is considered a very special occasion for married women. This festival is associated with Savitri and Satyavan. It is celebrated every year on Jyeshtha Amavasya, which this year falls today, on Monday, May 26, 2025.

On Vat Savitri, married women dress up with sixteen types of adornments and observe a fast for the long life of their husbands. This festival is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm among married women. For the puja, women, dressed like brides, carry a bamboo basket filled with jaggery, soaked chickpeas, sweet gul-gules, kumkum, roli, akshat, mauli, fruits, betel leaves, areca nuts, incense sticks, and a water pot in their hands as they go to the banyan tree.

Gathering under the banyan tree, the women perform the worship, tie raw cotton threads around the tree, listen to the story of Savitri and Satyavan, and perform aarti. A key tradition of Vat Savitri is offering a bamboo fan during the puja, which holds special religious and traditional significance in this fast.

Importance Of Bamboo Fan In Vat Savitri Puja

During the puja, women fan the banyan tree with a hand-made bamboo fan. After this, they pray for their husband’s long life and eternal prosperity. Once the puja is over and they return home, they wash their husband’s feet, seek his blessings, and fan him with the same bamboo fan. It is believed that fanning with the bamboo fan removes all hardships from the husband. Additionally, donating a bamboo fan on Vat Savitri day is considered very auspicious, bringing coolness and peace to life.

The significance of the bamboo fan is also linked to the story of Savitri and Satyavan. According to the tale, when Satyavan fainted while cutting wood in the forest, Savitri laid him under the banyan tree. It was the intense heat of the Jyeshtha month, so Savitri cooled him by fanning him with a handmade bamboo fan while resting his head on her lap. To honour this tradition and remember the story, married women still offer bamboo fans during the puja and treat them with respect.

A Tradition With Deep Roots

Even today, the use of bamboo fans remains an essential part of the Vat Savitri Vrat, considered a crucial item without which the puja is incomplete. Despite the availability of many modern electronic devices, these customs are still observed with devotion during festivals and religious ceremonies, connecting us to our traditions.

Bamboo is regarded as a symbol of creation in religious beliefs. The bamboo fan also represents the cycle of life, embodying humility, simplicity, and coolness. Using a bamboo fan on Vat Savitri reminds devotees of Savitri’s sacrifice and her devotion as a wife.
