Ever since the title of the eighth Mission: Impossible film was changed from Dead Reckoning Part 2 to The Final Reckoning, fans have speculated that this could be the last time Tom Cruise steps into the shoes of Ethan Hunt. The title itself sparked theories about a possible end to the iconic franchise. Now, Cruise may have subtly confirmed those rumours.
The highly anticipated film had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last Friday, followed by a limited release in select markets, including India, Japan, and Korea.
Tom Cruise on the Mission Impossible franchise coming to an end
On the Cannes red carpet, during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom was asked about the film. As the interviewer concluded by saying, “I’d want everyone to see this movie. Maybe the final reckoning, maybe not, but what…” Tom interjected, saying, “It’s the final,” and added, “It’s not called final for nothing.”
The Internet Reacts
Fans were quick to react to the hint. While some praised Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie for potentially giving Ethan Hunt a fitting farewell, others expressed disappointment at the thought of not seeing more of the character.
“This is good. Tom can’t keep doing this in a wheelchair,” one fan joked, referencing Cruise’s age — 62. Another said, “They should end it before it becomes bad.”
But not everyone was ready to say goodbye, with one fan commenting, “I wish these films never end. They can get someone new, like in Bond.”
Tom’s passion for filmmaking
Interestingly, in the same interview, Tom also expressed his passion for filmmaking across genres. “I actually said I’m going to make movies into my 80s; actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s. I will never stop. I will never stop doing action, I will never stop doing drama, comedy films — I’m excited,” he said.
However, he stopped short of confirming whether the Mission: Impossible franchise would be part of those future plans.
