Bank Holiday Today: Find Out If Banks Are Open On Saturday, May 3

Despite being a Saturday, banks across India will remain open today, May 3, as it marks the first Saturday of the month. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, bank branches operate on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays, while remaining shut on the second and fourth Saturdays. Additionally, banks across the country are closed on all Sundays.

While weekends follow a standardised schedule, bank closures also depend on regional and national holidays, which vary by state. Customers are advised to verify local holiday lists with their nearest bank branches before planning in-person visits, as public holidays differ across India based on regional observances.

In May 2025, besides regular weekend closures, banks are scheduled to observe seven state-specific public holidays, per the RBI’s holiday calendar. Here’s a breakdown of the key dates:

  • May 1 (Thursday): Labour Day and Maharashtra Day were observed, leading to bank closures in cities including Mumbai, Nagpur, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Patna, and others.
  • May 7 (Wednesday): Banks in Guwahati will remain closed due to the Panchayat Elections.
  • May 9 (Friday): Kolkata banks will be shut to mark the birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
  • May 12 (Monday): Buddha Purnima will be observed in several states, resulting in closures in cities such as Delhi, Bhopal, Jammu, Kolkata, and Mumbai.
  • May 16 (Friday): Banks in Sikkim will observe a holiday for State Day.
  • May 26 (Monday): Tripura will mark the birth anniversary of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam with a bank holiday.
  • May 29 (Thursday): Himachal Pradesh will observe Maharana Pratap Jayanti, resulting in bank closures in the state.

Additionally, online banking services and ATM facilities will remain operational during these holidays. Customers are encouraged to plan their banking activities accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
