Akasa Air is moving ahead with its fleet expansion plans, aiming to operate 30 aircraft by the end of the year, with the 28th Boeing 737 MAX expected to arrive later this month, according to Chief Executive Vinay Dube, as reported by The Economic Times. Launched less than three years ago, the airline has rapidly grown its market presence, more than doubling its passenger count from 7.75 million in March 2024 to 16 million in March 2025.
However, supply chain disruptions and regulatory scrutiny have slowed its momentum. The delivery delays stem from heightened oversight of Boeing’s 737 MAX line, following a mid-air cabin panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines flight in early 2024.
Despite these challenges, Akasa has placed firm orders for 226 aircraft with Boeing. However, of the 446 Boeing 737 MAX jets ordered by Indian carriers, only around 65 have been delivered so far. Boeing is currently delivering aircraft at a pace of two per month. As a result, Akasa has had to ground some pilots due to limited aircraft availability.
In a bid to strengthen its balance sheet and fuel future growth, Akasa raised $135 million in fresh funding this February. The airline continues to receive backing from the Jhunjhunwala family, its largest shareholder.

Akasa Plan For Navi Mumbai And Jewar airports
Looking ahead, Akasa plans to base 5–7 aircraft each at the upcoming Navi Mumbai and Jewar airports, both expected to open later this year. Dube said the airline will be among the first carriers to operate from the new hubs, which he described as “cornerstones” of Akasa’s long-term network strategy.
Sources in the report indicate that Air India Express, a key competitor in the low-cost segment, is also preparing to expand its presence at both airports.
Currently, Akasa operates flights to 23 domestic cities and five international destinations. Dube reiterated that global expansion remains a “core strategic pillar,” noting its strong contribution to both profitability and future growth.
