Shardiya Navratri begins the day after Sarva Pitru Amavasya on the Pratipada Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Ashwin month. This year, Shardiya Navratri will start on September 22, 2025, and conclude on October 2, 2025.

Why Is Shardiya Navratri Celebrated?

In Hinduism, Shardiya Navratri is believed to commemorate Goddess Durga’s battle against Mahishasura for the welfare of the world. On the ninth day, she defeated Mahishasura, protecting the universe. This is why she is also called Mahishasura Mardini. On the first day of Shardiya Navratri, Ghatasthapana is performed, followed by nine days of worship, aarti, and offerings to the goddess in the morning and evening. On the day of Navratri Vrat Paran, Dussehra is celebrated.

Goddess Durga’s Vehicle In Shardiya Navratri?

This year, Shardiya Navratri begins on Monday, September 22. When Navratri starts on a Monday, Goddess Durga is believed to arrive on an elephant. The elephant is considered an auspicious vehicle of the goddess, symbolising peace and prosperity.
