Sunrisers Hyderabad started their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign on a high note, securing a 44-run victory over Rajasthan Royals. However, their celebrations were dampened by injuries to two key players – centurion Ishan Kishan and experienced pacer Mohammed Shami.
If either player is ruled out for an extended period, it could be a costly setback for both the franchise and the individuals.
Ishan Kishan’s century overshadowed by knee injury
Keeper-batter Ishan Kishan delivered a sensational performance, scoring a record-shattering 106 off just 47 balls. His explosive innings played a key role in SRH’s massive total of 286 runs. However, his night took an unfortunate turn during Rajasthan’s innings.
In the 18th over, Ishan injured his knee while making a diving effort at the boundary to save a four. He was seen writhing in pain and had to leave the field immediately. The Rs 11.25 crore acquisition could now face an uncertain IPL campaign, depending on the severity of his injury.
Mohammed Shami suffers left-hand injury
Adding to SRH’s woes, veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami sustained an injury to his left hand while fielding. In the 12th over, he attempted a sharp catch off Sanju Samson’s powerful shot but failed to hold on, hurting his hand in the process.
Shami was taken off the field for further medical assessment, with an X-ray scheduled to determine the extent of his injury. Having been bought for Rs 10 crore, his absence could leave a major gap in Hyderabad’s bowling attack.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s thumping win
Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) set a mammoth target of 286 runs. Rajasthan Royals put up a spirited fight, scoring 242 runs in their 20 overs, but fell short as Pat Cummins’ side sealed a comfortable 44-run victory.
As Sunrisers Hyderabad celebrate their opening win, they now anxiously await medical reports on their two key players. Losing Kishan or Shami for an extended period could shake up their plans for IPL 2025.
