Infosys is reportedly set to assess approximately 1,200 trainee engineers on March 18, after postponing the test indefinitely last month, according to a Business Standard report citing a source familiar with the matter. Originally scheduled for February 24, 2025, these assessments have been repeatedly delayed.
The decision comes after the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) filed a complaint against Infosys, alleging the unethical and unlawful termination of over 700 freshers.
The company had onboarded these 1,200 engineers between October and November. The trainees are allowed three attempts to pass the assessment, and those who fail are asked to leave.
In February, Infosys announced that the third attempt at the Generic FA2 assessment was being rescheduled to provide employees with more preparation time.
Delayed Joining Across Industry
The trainees had received offer letters in 2022 and were expected to join in 2023.
However, the company delayed onboarding as the industry struggled with a slowdown caused by global uncertainty. This delay in onboarding freshers was a widespread trend across the industry.
The Bangalore-based company had also laid off about 350 employees who were onboarded in October and had waited more than 2.5 years after receiving their offer letters.
This move sparked controversy, as the engineers were instructed to vacate the Mysore campus immediately, without being given any time to arrange travel.
The sudden termination of previous batches without proper procedure, along with the suspension of upcoming assessments, points to an effort to avoid scrutiny. This has raised wider concerns about employment practices within the IT sector, according to the NITES president.
“The abrupt termination of the previous batch without due process and the subsequent suspension of assessments for future batches indicate a clear attempt to avoid further scrutiny,” said Harpreet Singh Saluja, president of the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES).
