‘He Won The World Cup’: Sourav Ganguly Dismisses Rohit Sharma Retirement Talks

Rohit Sharma became the first captain in history to lead a team to the final of every ICC tournament after guiding India to the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final. However, Rohit also had to endure tough times as the India captain as the team faced to qualify for the WTC final for the first time as they faced a 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. With his Test future uncertain and questions looming over how long he will continue in ODIs, discussions around Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement have gained significant attention in recent days.

News agency PTI also reported ahead of the IND vs NZ final match that chief selector Ajit Agarkar is expected to have a conversation with Rohit regarding his future after the Champions Trophy concludes.

Why Is There Talk Of Rohit Sharma’s Retirement?: Sourav Ganguly

However, in the midst of all speculations, the former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly dismissed talks of Rohit’s retirement, questioning the need for such discussions. He highlighted Rohit’s recent success, including winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and leading India to the finals of major ICC tournaments, insisting that Rohit is performing well and deserves respect.

“Why is there talk of Rohit Sharma’s retirement? Why is this even a question? He won the World Cup just a few months ago. I don’t know what the selectors are thinking, but Rohit is playing very well. India is far better than New Zealand. India played in the 2023 World Cup finals, won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and they are still unbeaten in this Champions Trophy. The same team will play,” Sourav Ganguly said as quoted by India Today.

Coming to India’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, India are the only unbeaten team in the tournament. They defeated Steve Smith-led Australia in the semifinals to enter the finals while New Zealand bested Temba Bavuma’s South Africa in the semis to lock their final’s berth.
