Sandeep Reddy Vanga Shares Why He Cast Bobby Deol With An Impairment In Animal

Bobby Deol’s resurgence as an actor with OTT shows like ‘Aashram’ and Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’ has given a new breath to his career. In a recent interaction, Animal’s director Vanga spoke about his creative process and his decision to cast Bobby’s character with a hearing and speech impairment.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Bobby Deol’s character

In an interview with film critic and trade analyst Kmal Nahta, Sandeep Reddy Vanga spoke about creating Bobby’s character in a certain manner in the film. The actor, who won quite a lot of appreciation for his performance in the film alongside Ranbir Kapoor, played the arch nemesis in the film. Bobby played the role of Abrar Haque in the film.

“We have seen a lot of films where the hero and villain pick up the phone and abuse each other, or there is some sort of dialoguebaazi throughout the film,” said Sandeep, adding that he inverted the entire template. In fact, Bobby’s entry is quite late in ‘Animal’, the first-half focusing on Ranbir’s character and his persona.

“Since we have seen a lot of such exchanges in our films, I just thought of sketching him as a mute and a deaf person. The very idea of a deaf-and-mute person fighting in the climax was such an exciting idea”, Sandeep told Nahta.

This is not the first time that Vanga has discussed in detail about characterisation in his film or the way he made it the way he wanted to. The director has been at the forefront of challenging and taking criticism full-frontedly ever since ‘Animal’ released.
