Who Were Lord Shiva’s Parents?
In the Shrimad Devi Mahapurana, there is a mention of Lord Shiva’s parents. According to this scripture, once Narada Ji asked his father, Lord Brahma, who created the universe. He also inquired about the parents of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Brahma himself.
In response, Brahma Ji explained the birth of the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh) and their parents. He stated that Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh were born from the union of Goddess Durga and Shiva-form Brahman. This means that Goddess Durga, the embodiment of nature, is their mother, and Kaal SadaShiva is their father.
Another reference about Lord Shiva’s parents is also found. According to it, once there was a dispute between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding superiority. Brahma Ji claimed, “I am your father because the universe originated from me; I am the Prajapati (creator of beings).” In contrast, Vishnu Ji argued, “I am your father, as you were born from the lotus emerging from my navel.”
Hearing this conflict, SadaShiva appeared and said, “My sons, I have assigned you the roles of creation and sustenance in this universe. Similarly, I have entrusted Shiva and Rudra with the tasks of destruction and transformation. I have five faces—one from which ‘A’ (अ), the second from which ‘U’ (उ), the third from which ‘M’ (म), the fourth from which ‘Bindu’ (.), and the fifth from which ‘Nada’ (sound) emerged. These five elements together formed ‘OM’ (ॐ), which is my original mantra.”
