‘We’ve Been Asked This Before’: Anand Mahindra Confident Amid Tesla’s India Entry

Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has expressed confidence in his company’s ability to compete with Tesla if the electric vehicle giant enters the Indian market. A Reuters report suggests that Tesla has finalised locations for two showrooms in New Delhi and Mumbai, bringing the long-anticipated launch in India closer to reality.

Mahindra made these remarks in response to a query on the social media platform X about the potential competition.

Mahindra was asked on social media, “How will you handle the competition if dear @elonmusk brings his @Tesla to India? Are you ready Sir? @TataMotors_Cars.”

Drawing a parallel to India’s economic liberalisation in 1991, Mahindra recalled the arrival of foreign automakers such as Daewoo, Ford, General Motors, and Hyundai. He pointed out that while these companies introduced new technologies and designs, Mahindra successfully navigated that competitive environment.

“We have been asked similar questions ever since the opening up of the Indian economy in 1991. How will you compete against Tata, Maruti, and all MNCs? But we’re still around,” Mahindra remarked.

He further emphasised the company’s commitment to long-term growth and staying relevant.

“And working like maniacs to still be around and relevant even a century from now. With you cheering us on, we will make that happen,” he added.

In a follow-up post, Mahindra shared a screenshot of an earlier post about Tesla’s entry into India.

“Yes, Naresh. And even fewer remember my post of 2018 when he was going through a challenging period,” he remarked.

Mahindra recently launched its XUV400 and the all-electric XUV.e8, reinforcing its commitment to the EV segment.

Tesla, meanwhile, has expressed interest in the Indian market, with recent job postings for roles such as Tesla Advisor, Inside Sales Advisor, and Consumer Engagement Manager. This comes after a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
