Tesla EVs Tipped To Start Selling In India Next Month? Check Out How Much They Could Cost

Tesla in India: Tesla CEO Elon Musk is reportedly planning to launch the company’s retail operations in India by April this year, starting with imports from its Berlin plant, according to a CNBC-TV18 report released on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. Showroom locations have been identified in Mumbai’s BKC business district and Aerocity in New Delhi.

The initial plan includes introducing an electric vehicle (EV) priced under $25,000 (approximately Rs 21 lakh) for the Indian market, the report added.

Although Tesla has not yet confirmed plans to manufacture its EVs in India, the company is aiming to increase its component sourcing from local OEM suppliers, with expectations to surpass $1 billion in sourcing by 2025, according to the report.

Showroom Locations

According to Reuters, Tesla has chosen locations for two showrooms in New Delhi and Mumbai, indicating progress in its long-delayed plans to sell electric cars in India. The US automaker has been searching for showroom space in India since late last year, with plans to enter the world’s third-largest auto market after putting its market entry on hold in 2022.

Tesla has reportedly chosen a location in the Aerocity area near New Delhi’s international airport for one of its showrooms, as confirmed by two sources familiar with the discussions. Aerocity is known for its hotels, retail outlets, and offices of global corporations.

In Mumbai, the company has selected space in the bustling Bandra Kurla Complex, a major business and retail hub near the city’s airport, the first source said. Both showrooms in Delhi and Mumbai are expected to span around 5,000 square feet (464.52 square meters), as reported by Reuters, citing an anonymous source.
