The 2016 romantic drama ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane, made a surprising comeback to theaters earlier this month, receiving immense love from audiences. The re-release prompted directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru to announce a sequel. However, soon after, producer Deepak Mukut raised concerns, stating that he was not consulted and that he owns the intellectual property (IP) rights to the film.
Amid the confusion, director Vinay Sapru has now assured that everything has been sorted out between the makers and confirmed that the much-anticipated sequel is officially on track for a 2026 release.
Sequel plans were in place from the beginning
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Vinay Sapru explained that the idea for Sanam Teri Kasam 2 had been conceived alongside the original film. He clarified, “Sanam Teri Kasam begins with a flashback. We wrote part two of the film at that time only. We wanted to go ahead with a second part, but unfortunately, for whatever reason, we couldn’t. Nobody even asked for it all this while, until now. This confusion has been happening because of the interviews. I want to put it on record once and for all: There will be another story of love and promises that will arrive on Valentine’s in 2026, but we haven’t announced a film. How can I be so selfish to announce? I love my team – my producer, my actors. Deepak is a dear friend; I had dinner with him on Monday night.”
Producer Deepak Mukut to lead the project
Addressing concerns about the rights, Vinay Sapru confirmed that Deepak Mukut would remain the producer of the upcoming sequel. “We are a team. This journey is for all of us,” he added, putting an end to speculations about disputes within the camp.
Earlier, Deepak Mukut had responded to reports of the sequel, asserting his ownership of the film’s IP rights. “The IP of Sanam Teri Kasam belongs to me since I am its producer. So, the right to make a sequel or even a prequel or a remake rests with me. I announced the sequel in September 2024 with Harshvardhan Rane in the lead. As for the directors (Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru), I haven’t had any discussion with them. They haven’t met and spoken to me about it. I have not finalized any director.”
Box office success of re-release
The renewed interest in Sanam Teri Kasam was evident at the box office, where the re-release has collected over Rs 37 crore in just 12 days. The film’s continued popularity among fans has created a strong foundation for the sequel’s success in 2026.
