World Cancer Day: Know About Breast Cancer — The Power of Early Detection And Prevention

Breast cancer is a phrase that carries weight, fear, and uncertainty. It the most common cancer affecting millions of females worldwide, yet we often think it won’t happen to us or someone we love—until it does. The reality is that most of us must know someone in the family, friends or relatives diagnosed with breast cancer. The more agonizing fact about it is that even when the disease can be easily cured without one losing her breast, we still have many women dying of it with a rate as high as one out of every two women just because it is being diagnosed in late stages. It not only cures the disease but saves the woman from losing her breast.

However, the good news is, catching things early and making a few simple changes can truly make a difference. It not only cures the disease but saves the woman from losing her breast from  harmful effects of chemotherapy and extensive surgery

Who Is Most At Risk?

Breast cancer can affect women at any age, but the most common age group affected with breast cancer across the world is 40-55 years. Surprisingly, in India, women are being diagnosed nearly a decade earlier, typically between the ages of 35 and 45. This shift highlights the importance of awareness, early screenings, and proactive health measures.

What Are The Major Risk Factors?

Breast cancer doesn’t have a single cause, but multiple factors contribute to its development. Some of the biggest lifestyle culprits include:

  • Dietary Habits: Increased consumption of processed and packaged foods.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity.
  • Stress & Mental Health: Chronic stress can take a toll on overall health, including breast health.
  • Alcohol & Smoking: Rising popularity of adaptation of smoking and alcohol among women.
  • Genetics: Around 10% of cases are linked to a family history of breast cancer.

While we can’t change our genes, we can certainly modify our lifestyle choices to reduce risk.

How Can You Lower Your Risk of Breast Cancer?

The best way to lower your risk is to self-examine and get screened. Every woman should follow the Pink Route to Healthy Breasts: This includes: 

  • Self-Breast Examination: Conduct a self-breast examination once a month after the breasts have developed.
  • Consult a Breast Expert: Start at age 25 to assess your individual risk.
  • Annual Mammograms: After turning 40, start undergoing a mammogram every year.  

Catching Cancer Early: Why It Matters

Screening saves lives—there’s no debate about that. More than the therapies, widespread screening should be made available to every woman after 40 years of age. Countries like the UK and the US have significantly reduced breast cancer-related deaths by implementing widespread screening programs. So, why wait for symptoms to appear? A mammogram can detect cancer before it’s even palpable, offering a chance for early intervention and easier treatment.

Are Minimally Invasive Treatments Changing The Game?

Minimally invasive surgeries and targeted radiation therapies have made breast cancer treatment more effective and less traumatic. However, these options are only viable when cancer is caught early (Stages 0, I, II). These are not meant for women in late-stage disease (II/IV).

Does Stress Play A Role In Breast Health?

We often underestimate how much stress impacts our bodies. Persistent stress can lead to hormonal imbalances, unexplained breast pain, and even nipple discharge. Finding ways to manage stress, whether through yoga, meditation, exercise, or therapy, can go a long way in maintaining overall health.

Breast cancer may be a daunting reality, but early detection offers a powerful advantage. With regular screenings, self-examinations, and lifestyle modifications, women can significantly reduce their risk and improve outcomes. The key lies in awareness, timely action, and prioritising health. A simple check-up can be life changing.
