AUS vs SL 1st Test: Khawaja Slams Historic Double Century In Galle, Becomes First Australia…

Usman Khawaja 200: Australian opening batter Usman Khawaja made history in the ongoing Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test at Galle as he became the first Aussie batter to slam a double century in a Test match in Sri Lanka. The 38-year-old left-hander reached the milestone during the morning session on Day 2 of the Test.

Khawaja reached his double century with a single on the first ball of the 111th over in Australia’s first innings when Prabath Jayasuriya bowled a tossed-up delivery around off. Stepping down the track, Khawaja tapped the ball to Jayasuriya’s right. Expecting the mid-off fielder to cut the ball off, Jayasuriya misjudged the situation, but the ball rolled harmlessly to mid-off, allowing Khawaja to seize the moment and complete a single. He brought up his 200th run off 290 deliveries, including 16 fours and one six. The Australian left-handed batter now has 16 Test centuries to his name.

Australia’s stand-in captain in the match, Steve Smith also registered a milestone of his own as he crossed the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket to become only the 15th to do so. He went on to score his 35th Test hundred.

Khawaja and Smith anchored Australia’s commanding first innings with a massive 266-run partnership. The duo added 71 runs on Day 2 before Smith was dismissed for 141, trapped lbw by leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay, Sri Lanka’s most threatening bowler.
