The ‘Sunil Gavaskar’s Criticism of Indian Cricket Team Saga’ takes a new turn, as Test and ODI skipper – Rohit Sharma, has reportedly filed a complaint to BCCI over the series of latest comments and criticism from the 1983 World Cup winner.
Sunil Gavaskar has been extremely vocal from past few years in concern with his opinions on the form, commitment, and technique of Indian players, and this has not been taken well by some of the senior players of the side, especially Virat Kohli.
“Rohit felt that it was not necessary for Sunil Gavaskar to criticize him in that fashion, and that’s why he complained to the BCCI about Gavaskar. All these added so much pressure that he was compelled to tell it all to BCCI,” reported Cricblogger, citing a source close to the matter.
The criticism of Rohit Sharma does not feel exaggerated, as the Indian skipper produced a horrendous run with the bat in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series, where the ‘Hitman’ managed merely 31 runs, and was outscored by even some of the tailenders.
Such shambolic performances raised concerns over the future of the 37-year-old in red-ball cricket, who decided to up-the-ante by featuring in the Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir.
However, the move turned out to be a complete failure, as J&K bowlers exposed the weakness of Rohit Sharma on tough surfaces, and Mumbai succumbed to a humiliating defeat.
Sunil Gavaskar’s criticism might be deemed as ‘too much’ by the Indian players, but all of his predictions, readings, did carry a major motive behind it, and that was, the welfare of the Indian Cricket Team, as the legendary cricketer hinted at heading towards a new era by saying the following after the Sydney Test:
“If a captain doubts his place in the team, it’s time to retire.”
